room: about
at its inception, and as it evolved, modernist
design celebrated the possibilities of an industrial society. with
advances in materials and manufacturing methods, modernists such
as le corbusier, saarinen, breuer and van der rohe in europe and
the eames in america approached architecture and design as though
they were one in the same. the furnishings they left us were, in
many cases, designed for specific projects and buildings. a whole
building plan included everything from the facade to the fountains
to the flooring to the furniture. they believed in creating a better
world one chair, one room, one building, and one community at a time.
room, inc. was founded to celebrate the heritage and the influence
of mid-century modern design. we buy only from officially licensed
manufacturers such as herman miller, knoll, and modernica for classic
artifacts of design. we also celebrate the rich and varied progeny
of the modernists with such manufacturers as cherner chair, chilewich,
and egaway+zbryk.
for flooring and textile selections we turn to interface, bentley
prince street, and maharam. the reissue by maharam of midcentury
fabrics from notable designers such as alexander girard and verner
panton recreates the exciting style of the ‘50s and ‘60s.
in addition to the big names we all know, room supports boutique
manufacturers and artisans. from the sumptuous bedding we offer from
fold bedding to the modern inspired paintings of adam findley room
looks to the pleasing qualities of a product rather than the impressive
reputation of the manufacturer when selecting offerings for our customers.
our 'true originals' section features unique hand crafted items produced
locally in omaha and around the united states.
we hope you enjoy our selections. to see more of our inventory,
please stop by our store in omaha's old market. if you are looking
for something special, unique or hard to find, give us a call. after
all, what's a driving obsession if there's no one to share it with?
